About University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba
The University of Lagos is fondly called ‘The First Choice University’ because of its acceptance and popularity among the Nigerian people. The school has three campuses, two (2) campuses in Yaba and one in Surulere.
The main campus is in Yaba, and the college of education is in Idi-Araba, Surulere. The school was founded in 1962 with a student population of 131 which has since grown to over 40,000 over the years. Also, the staff strength of the University has experienced a massive improvement from less than a hundred to almost three thousand five hundred.
There are twelve (12) faculties in the school which are the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.
The University also offers Masters and Doctorate degrees in the programmes listed above. Professor Oluwatoyin is the newly elected Vice Chancellor of the school after he took over the mantle of leadership from Professor Rahmon Ade Bello who occupied the position between 2012 and 2017.
There are so many notable and influential personalities who are graduates of this school. Some of them are Ibrahim Dankwambo (Governor of Gombe State), Omoyele Sowore (Media Entrepreneur), Babatunde Ogunnaike (Professor of Engineering), Funke Akindele ( Actress), Reekado Banks (Singer), Linda Ikeji (Model and Blogger), Kayode Fayemi (Former Governor of Ekiti State), Kate Henshaw Nutal (Actress), Genevieve Nnaji (Actress), Adetokunbo Kayode (Former Minister), Helen Paul (Comedian), Akinwunmi Ambode (Governor of Lagos State) and Sarah Jibril (Nigeria’s first female presidential aspirant).
