About Bayero University (BU), Kano:
Bayero University was originally called Ahmadu Bello College for the then Premier of the Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello.
Ahmadu Bello College was set up in 1960 and was located in the SAS (School of Arabic Studies) in the old Kano state, Nigeria. As a coincidence, a university was already established in Zaria and was called Ahmadu Bello University.
This facilitated a need to change the name of the College from Ahmadu Bello College to Abdullahi Bayero College. Due to limited facilities, the College was moved to a temporary site and Kano airport hotel where it admitted its first set of students for undergraduate programs (ten students) in 1964.
The college was then merged with Ahmadu Bello University and became a faculty in the university, thereby graduating its first set of students in 1966, and this trend continued till 1980. Due to the damage that was done to the temporary site by the civil war, the school moved to the site, which eventually became its permanent site in Kabuga and Dakawuya gates on the Kano-Gwarzo road.
With persistent efforts of the management, Abdullahi Bayero College attained the status of a university college in 1975 and was granted the right to award students with degrees on behalf of the Ahmadu Bello University and hence its name was once more changed to Abdullahi Bayero University College and had its own governing body.
In 1977, the federal government raised all the university colleges in Nigeria to the status of conventional universities, and this led to the change of name of the Abdullahi Bayero University College to become Bayero University, Kano.
