About Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri
Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education is located in the capital of Imo state, Owerri. The institution which has been renamed the Alvan Ikoku University of Education was established in the year 1963. The Alvan Ikoku University of Education as it’s now called was set up by the old Eastern Nigeria Government and had its original campus on the Old Shell Camp in Owerri.
The institution currently breeds highly effective teachers as it awards the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) to teachers in training who excel in their academic program in the college. The institution has been affiliated with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka since 1984 to award B.ed to students who undergo its degree programs.
The current provost and the first ever female Provost of the College Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing C. Ijeoma oversees the activity of the college is poised to grow the institution from grace to grace. The school which in its inception had just around 150 students now has over 13,000+ students and growing while the academic staffs of the institution are put at over 600 personnel.
The first campus of the college was set up in Umuahia (the capital of Abia state) in 1976; the next campus was set up in Orlu, Imo state in 1981. The multi-campus system was brought to a halt in 1987, and the Orlu campus remained. The year 2007 saw a new chapter open for the college as the Federal Government of Nigeria took over the institution, subsequently giving it the name ‘Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri.’ The college, however, was turned (upgraded) into a university by the Goodluck Jonathan led government on May 20th, 2015, renaming it Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
