ABOUT ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA UNIVERSITY (ATBU):
One of the most prominent institutes of technology in northern Nigeria is the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. It was so named to honor the first prime minister of Nigeria after the independence, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
ATBU is a federal university that boasts of more than a thousand administrative staff and more than 10,000 students.
Established in 1980, this institution was formerly called the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. However, on October 1st, 1984, the school was merged with the then Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and became known as Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus.
Four years later (1988), ATBU regained control over itself once more because of the movement to demerger merged institutions by the government. That was how the school came to be known as Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
The academic system of the institution was established in 1980 after the founders and management consulted subject experts both home here in Nigerian, United Kingdom, and the USA. The system adopted by the administration is still highly functional in every school and unit of the institution, and it deals with more practical and technical aspects of learning.
ATBU offers prospective students with undergraduate and graduate programs across six schools. These highly reputable and recognized schools are:
- School of Engineering
- School of Sciences
- School of Environmental Technology
- School of Agriculture
- School of Management Technology and
- School of Technology Education
The institution is governed by a chancellor and a vice-chancellor. The chancellor is just a ceremonial head while the vice –chancellor, who is often appointed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, is the CEO (chief executive officer) and academic officer of the institution.
Vice-chancellors are often appointed on a five-year tenure that is non-renewable.
